Best destinations to visit in February in Asia

Asia often centers around one major event in February, since Lunar New Year falls within the month more years than not.

Southeast Asia stays in its dry season through February, with clear skies and comfortable humidity in much of the region. South Asia remains cool and pleasant too, making this one of the more comfortable months for sightseeing before the heat builds later in spring. East Asia holds onto winter a while longer, keeping ski resorts and hot spring towns busy through the month. Domestic travel within the region also picks up around Lunar New Year, so booking ahead can make a real difference.

The destinations on our list for Asia reflect that same mix of festival energy, dry season beaches and lingering winter further north.

Country
Singapore
Tropical city-state of hawker food and gardens
Lunar New Year is celebrated widely in this city state, usually in late January or February. Chinatown is decorated with lights and stalls. Lion dances, red lanterns and family dinners mark the holiday. The Chingay parade and River Hongbao take place around the same time. February is among the drier months.
City in Japan
Sapporo
Snow festival city with ramen and beer
With nearly two million residents, this is the largest city on the island of Hokkaido. The Sapporo Snow Festival takes place in early February, with large snow and ice sculptures in Odori Park. Miso ramen and fresh seafood are warming meals in the cold. Ski areas are close to the center.
Country
Maldives
Coral atolls, lagoons and overwater villas
Compared with the rainy months from May to October, February is dry and sunny across these coral atolls. Seas are usually calm and the water is clear for snorkeling and diving. Resorts book up early at this time. Manta rays and whale sharks can be seen in some atolls.
Country
Bhutan
Himalayan monasteries, dzongs and trekking trails
Between India and China, this small Himalayan kingdom has steep valleys, forests and snowy peaks. February is cold but dry, with clear skies and few other visitors. Monasteries such as Tiger's Nest above Paro can be reached on foot. Some monastery festivals take place in late winter and early spring.
