Best hiking destinations in South America

Iconic mountain trails and ancient stone pathways in South America

South America's hiking is shaped by extreme contrasts in altitude, climate and terrain. The Andes form the spine of the continent, offering everything from high-altitude desert crossings and glaciated peaks to remote cloud forest trails. To the east, lowland jungle routes operate on entirely different terms, where heat and humidity are constants but the biodiversity is extraordinary. In most of the continent your money goes a long way, making it an accessible destination even for extended trips.

The classic long-distance routes are well established and see significant international traffic, with multi-day circuits through glacial valleys and granite towers drawing hikers from around the world. Infrastructure on these trails ranges from well-maintained to basic, and permit systems on the most popular routes now require booking months in advance. Beyond the headline destinations, a vast network of lesser-known trails offers serious wilderness with very little company.

Altitude sickness is a genuine consideration on Andean routes, with many trailheads sitting above 3,000 metres. Acclimatisation time is not optional. Weather windows are narrow in some areas, with heavy precipitation making trails impassable outside the dry season. Logistics can be complex in remote zones but local guiding infrastructure has improved considerably, and experienced operators are available across most of the major hiking regions.
