Best stargazing destinations in South America

High-altitude Andean valleys and clear night sky reserves in South America

South America's dark sky destinations are among the finest in the world, with high-altitude Andean deserts producing atmospheric conditions that have attracted major international observatories for decades. The combination of elevation, aridity and minimal light pollution across vast interior regions creates exceptional transparency for much of the year. Your money goes a long way across most of the continent, making extended stays practical even when weather requires flexibility.

The Atacama Desert is the continent's most established astrotourism zone, with a well-developed infrastructure of guided tours, private observatories and accommodation built around night sky access. Further south, Patagonian skies offer a wilder experience with fewer facilities but outstanding conditions during stable weather periods. The southern hemisphere position gives excellent access to features invisible from northern latitudes including the Magellanic Clouds and the galactic core overhead.

Altitude sickness is a genuine consideration at many of the best sites, several of which sit above 4,000 metres, and acclimatisation time should be built into any itinerary. Night temperatures at elevation drop sharply regardless of daytime heat and cold weather gear is essential. The dry season delivers the most reliable conditions but popular sites are increasingly busy during peak months, and booking ahead is advisable for guided programmes and quality accommodation.
